Nike Mags - Self Lacing Shoes From Back To The Future

Nike Mags 2015

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past few hours, then you know today is Back to the Future Day. In the trilogy's second film, Michael J. Fox's character Martin Seamus McFly, better known as Marty, gave us a glimpse of how things would look on October 21st, 2015. And even though the future according to the movie may have not been fully accurate (which is okay), Marty's power-laced Nike sneakers are indeed a reality. While the sportswear juggernaut did release the Mag in 2011, that version didn't use the self-lacing technology we saw in Back to the Future Part II. But don't worry, the actual Marty McFly shoes are coming in spring 2016, Nike has confirmed.

Almost 30 years ago, Nike was asked to collaborate on a movie that would feature scenes set in the futuristic world of 2015. The brand was challenged to imagine sneakers that would suit the inhabitants of the advanced era. The innovation team, which regularly looks into a crystal ball of athlete insight and technology to project the future of sport, took that task further.

The resulting Nike Mag reinvented the conventional lacing system, integrating it into an inimitable design that became an enduring beacon of popular culture. As Nike, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Parker put it, “We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes.”

Today, Nike delivered a gift to Michael J. Fox introducing the innovation to the shoe’s first, and most celebrated, wearer.

Today has been a big one for Back to the Future fans, especially those who have been waiting to see if Oct. 21, 2015 finally makes self-lacing sneakers a reality. Back to the Future II predicted that Nike Mags would be able to lace themselves by this day, and Michael J. Fox just proved the movie right on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

In celebration of Back to the Future Day, Fox was a special guest on the show, and all eyes were on his sneakers. The future is officially here, and it's just as glorious as we dreamed of. The sneaker will be available for auction in 2016.
